Magic is real, I swear
The magic of the arts and hey if you're not doing anything Sunday, join us for the Listen to Your Mother Show
On Friday night I got to perform in the Front Range Funny Festival. Amazing! And there were only about 10 people in the audience. Not so amazing!
“Buckle up,” I said to myself. “This is going to suck.” Like a virus or a yawn, laughter is catching. And big crowds typically mean more laughs.
But there was this one guy who was having a blast. His laugh was super distinct… and super contagious.
Every time he laughed, after a beat, the whole room went along and laughed too.
You could feel this energetic exchange happening in this weird bamboo wallpapered room in a suburban trampoline emporium (and yes I did a lot of bouncing after the gig) and it was magical.
The mere chance to experience that kind of magic is why I subject to myself to the potential humiliation of telling jokes in front of strangers.
After the show, the laugher told me he was depressed and he had been all his life. But going to local comedy shows is is “reset” button.
He thanked me for making him laugh.
I thanked him for making my set feel so good.
When we get together to share an experience, we create something that you can’t see or touch but you know it’s there. And that’s what I mean by magic.
The room takes on a different pulse. Your heart feels a little lighter. You can’t see it but you know there’s an invisible string tying you to every other person in that room. (Thank you to our lord and savior Taylor Swift for that metaphor.)
Will you join me and and our amazing cast for another magical experience this Sunday, May 4th in downtown Boulder?
We’re co-producing Boulder’s 12th annual Listen to Your Mother Show, and it’s going to be amazing. We had a record number of submissions this year and we just cannot wait to share them with you.
🗒 Featuring 13 local writers reading their original stories that touch on the good, the bad, and the ugly aspects of motherhood, this show will make you laugh, cry, and feel all the feels.
